Neil Gaiman on Taking Good Omens from Book to Screen [Video]

Prepare thyself, something wickedly good this way comes. Best-selling author Neil Gaiman took to the SXSW stage for a conversation with writer and actress Kirsten Vangsness about his upcoming mini-series adaptation of Good Omens.

Based on the satirical novel Gaiman co-authored with Terry Pratchett, Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the story centers around a fussy angel, Aziraphale (Michael Sheen), and the loose-living demon, Crowley (David Tennant), as they join forces to prevent the coming of the Apocalypse. The release date is nigh for the new six-episode series coming to Amazon Prime Video on May 31.

During the Featured Session, Gaiman reflected on collaborating with Terry Pratchett and the playful duel of literary wits that unfolded as they passed chapters back and forth, ultimately resulting in a world-renowned fantasy novel. “When you are writing you normally don’t have an audience,” said Gaiman. “The magical thing for me and for Terry about writing Good Omens is we had an audience. His audience was me and mine was him.”

Good Omens in a lot of ways was me and Terry [Pratchett] trying to talk about what it means to be human.”

Before Pratchett’s death in 2015, Gaiman recalled receiving a message from him about the destiny of Good Omens which read, “You have to do this…you’re the only person who has the same understanding of and passion for the old girl.” Gaiman described how the work transformed into a “mad passion project” and throughout the adaptation journey he unflinchingly held onto Pratchett’s vision for Good Omens.

From book to screen to the streets of Austin, the series was brought to life during SXSW with roaming fallen angels and live musical performances in Prime Video’s Garden of Earthly Delights as well as a mid-Featured Session interruption from The Chattering Order of St. Beryl with their chorus of unholy a cappella.

“The power of being a writer is a really peculiar and wonderful thing.”

Before embarking into the world of Good Omens, watch the entire Featured Session with Neil Gaiman to take a deeper dive into Gaiman’s writing insights and find out what’s next.

7 Non-Obvious Trends Changing The Future with Rohit Bhargava [Video]

Wall Street Journal best-selling author Rohit Bhargava returned to SXSW to discuss some recent trends that will shape our world in the near future. The session features many insights from the 2019 edition of his Non-Obvious trends book series as well as a behind the scenes look at how he organizes data into trends.

While the session has many actionable observations about emerging trends like retro trust and innovation envy, the real takeaway is the insight into Bhargava’s thought process. With innovation moving at such a rapid pace, thinkers equipped to identify trends at their onset will be best positioned to take advantage of them in their businesses.

“We hear about innovation and we hear about creativity, but really what it means is – you’re seeing the things that everybody else is seeing, and you are coming up with a different conclusion.” – Rohit Bhargava

In Memoriam: Dr. William “Lynn” Weaver

Dr. William “Lynn” Weaver, renowned surgeon and beloved friend to StoryCorps, passed away over the weekend.

Dr. Weaver first came to StoryCorps as one of the first participants in our Griot initiative, recording with his daughter, Kimberly, in 2007 when our MobileBooth visited The King Center in Atlanta. In this StoryCorps conversation, Lynn remembered his father, Ted Weaver, a janitor and chauffeur in Knoxville, TN, and recounted a time when his father learned algebra one night from a textbook so that he could help Lynn with his homework. It was one of the most memorable and popular StoryCorps stories ever broadcast.

Lynn became part of the StoryCorps family after that, and would go on to record several more times, including a story about a Christmas when his family visited another that was in need and a tribute to teachers who helped him find pathways to education, in spite of the many obstacles that Lynn encountered while integrating an all-white high school in 1964.

Lynn’s relationship to his alma mater, West High School in Knoxville, was the subject of some of the most powerful and prescient recollections he shared with us. In April 2018, Lynn returned to West High for the first time in five decades, at the invitation of the principal, to talk about his experiences as one of the first African American students to attend the school. StoryCorps producer Jud Esty-Kendall recorded the visit; it was shared as part of a two-part podcast episode last fall (Part I, Part II).

Lynn wrote of the experience: “I had no fond memories of attending school there, the school I helped desegregate, and could not even bring myself to drive by the building for the past 50 years. Then the principal called me. She shared with me that listening to my StoryCorps story had brought her to tears, and that she wanted students and teachers at the school to hear my story. She asked me to reconsider visiting the high school. My decision to revisit my old school lifted 50 years of pain and hatred from my heart.”

Over the years, Lynn became the most featured interview subject in the history of StoryCorps with no less than four segments (no other subject’s story has been broadcast more than twice). Lynn’s interviews all centered around the themes of honoring his father and other giants in his life who lifted him up on their shoulders.

Lynn was the greatest giant of them all: a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and a StoryCorps legend. Rest in power, Dr. Weaver — your voice, spirit, and work will be missed, but never forgotten.

— The StoryCorps Team

Eli Pariser: What Does Healthy Technology Look Like? [Video]

At the 2019 Conference, author, online organizer, SXSW Interactive Hall of Fame honoree, and co-founder of Upworthy Eli Pariser returned to SXSW to discuss a new framework for creating a better online world. Throughout his career, Pariser has focused on figuring out how technology can elevate important topics in the world. Now, Pariser is trying to define what a healthy society might look like and what goals we need to establish to solve global issues.

“People’s behavior is significantly constructed by their environment. Small tweaks to that environment can radically change what we think of as their inherent morale character or truth.”

Pariser defines some of the harms digital platforms are causing as misinformation and disinformation, harassment and bullying, incitement against ethnic groups and election interference. While its important to identify and solve these issues to create a better digital environment, there isn’t a conversation happening around what we want the world to look like after solving these problems. According to Pariser, we haven’t figured out how to state our positive goals in a metrical way.

“Our literature is replete with stories about misguided wishes… That’s the blessing and the curse of the moment that we’re in right now. We have these institutions and we have these incredibly potent powers as a civilization… We have to know what we want. When it comes to creating the bedrock for a better society we can do better in being able to articulate what our values and principles are.”

Still in its early stages, Pariser, through social science research and in-depth conversations with leading technologists, has begun to create a list of guiding principles for building a better digital future.

Watch the full session to learn more about Pariser’s principles and ideas for the future of the internet. See more SXSW 2019 videos from Conference, Featured Speakers, and Keynotes on our YouTube channel.

Dennis Crowley: How Ethics Got Foursquare Through the Last 10 Years [Video]

Dennis Crowley launched Foursquare at SXSW 10 years ago and changed the tech scene with the “check in.” At SXSW 2019, he reunited on stage with journalist Laurie Segall, his original interviewer, to discuss the industry changes in the collection of location data from then to now and how that’s impacted the way they do things behind the scenes – as well as debuting the new technology from Foursquare, Hypertrending.

When reflecting on what led Crowley to decide to prioritize ethics training for all levels of employees, Crowley cited the announcement of the Muslim ban as a large motivation for auditing all of Foursquare’s tech to make sure none of it could be misused. Through the specific company culture Foursquare has cultivated over time, Crowley found that he had created an environment where staff felt empowered to create their own safeguards within the code of their tech and everyone on every level felt comfortable to speak out when they saw something that they thought could be questionable.

“As it gets harder to navigate what technology companies are supposed to do and not do, it was clear that the employees would ask questions and we would be thoughtful in explaining how everything works so everyone felt good about what we were doing. Doctors and lawyers, they get ethics training, why not people who work at a tech company?”
