Inside the Modern Day Writers’ Room Featured Session at SXSW 2018 [Video]
In this 2018 SXSW Featured Session moderated by journalist Monica Castillo, learn what really happens inside of the writers room for a modern day television show with Zach Anner (Speechless), Kendall McKinnon(Eyewitness), and Shintaro Shimosawa (The Walking Dead and Fear of the Walking Dead).
During the Making Film & Episodics Track session, panelists had a very open and candid conversation covering everything from how they got their start to different aspects of diversity.
“You have to find people of different races, you have to find people of different physical abilities, and you have to seek them out and give them the opportunities and tools so they can thrive.” – Zach Anner on inclusion inside and outside of the writers room
Castillo posed a question about continuing to grow as a writer and sustaining career development while working in a writers room and McKinnon responded with,” Inherently it is [the industry] sort of set up where you are always doing something different and always learning. You are going from show to show…I get to go from one writers room to another and meet new people and have new challenges, and new characters which is really exciting.”
Watch the 2018 Featured Session to explore more about these writers and stay tuned to the Making Film & Episodics Track as related sessions for SXSW 2019 are announced.

2019 SXSW Showcasing Artist Tips: Time Management
We’ve recently announced the first wave of 240 Showcasing Artists performing at SXSW 2019, and we’ll be dropping more lists of great talent as we get closer to March. If you’re going to be performing SXSW for the first time and don’t know what to expect – look no further. Here are a few tips on how to best manage your time during the hectic SXSWeek.
Tips for Showcasing Artists
It’s a marathon, not a race
So much happens each day during SXSW – informative Conference sessions on the music industry, day parties that are great for networking, nighttime showcases with talent from all over the world, etc. With so many things to do between your performances, it can be hard to find enough time to sleep or eat a meal with vegetables for that matter. If you will be in Austin for multiple days, which we definitely recommend from a career-building perspective, then you’ll need to spread out your plans a bit (and take it easy on the booze) to make sure that you don’t spend the last day in town sleeping it off.
Stay a while
As mentioned above, extending your stay in Austin will give you the best opportunity to make the industry connections you are seeking at SXSW. Take advantage of time off stage by filling out your agenda with relevant Conference sessions and networking day parties. Your Showcasing Artist Wristband will give you access to these sessions and events.
Stick around downtown
Don’t venture too far away from downtown during the event. With so many people in town, you can find yourself cutting it close on the way to a showcase if you have to drive too far, so be sure to give yourself extra time when moving around Austin. Also, if you stay central, it will be much easier to improvise when you hear about an interesting event last-minute. Explore more about navigating Austin with various transportation options on our Getting Around page.
Don’t over/under-extend yourself
This is a bit of a balancing act. Your time is limited, and you’ll want to do as much as possible with it – whether that’s playing showcases, taking advantage of press opportunities, or meeting up with fellow musicians to discuss potential collaborations – but you won’t be able to take advantage of last-minute opportunities if you book your time solid before you arrive in Austin.

Exploring the Learning Hub in Singapore
Exploring the Learning Hub in Singapore
Kris Provoost is an architect and a photographer based in Shanghai, China. We have featured his work before on ABDZ and I would like to feature his series of photographs of the Learning Hub located in Singapore. Currently visiting Singapore myself but I won’t have time to make a trip to “the Hive” for that amazing look-up. I would like to pass on the mic to my buddy Kris who did an amazing job, so check it out!

Photography with Pixel 2 in Japan
Photography with Pixel 2 in Japan
Francois, our chief editor, has been on a journey to Asia with his family. He’s been wandering around Japan and Singapore for a more than a month living the culture and trying to capture everything with his Pixel 2 camera. I love seeing Francois photos and how much he cares about the craft of photography. This post is an example and it was originally shared on his Behance profile.
During the month of October 2018, Francois’ (@wander_four) went on this crazy journey to Japan. They decided to visit West Japan which would include a trip of touring hand-picked cities from Tokyo all the way to Hiroshima. In total, they have traveled through 13 cities, it has been an extraordinary adventure that they will surely never forget.
As an ally to this crazed escapade, I had the best smartphone camera (in my opinion) to hold and capture any moments along the way. I have been a Google Pixel user since the very first Pixel. But the Pixel 2 has been incredibly impressive especially with the camera. Rocking only a 12.2MP f/1.8 lens, this phone truly shines through its software.
So Francois decided to share some of his favorites shots from Japan. He bookmarked about 200 shots but here are the first few. Just to add a little bit more glitter to the Pixel 2‘s camera abilities, all the following images are unedited. Enjoy!

Fantastic Architectural Illustrations by Doug John Miller
Fantastic Architectural Illustrations by Doug John Miller
The illustrations you are about to see are simply mind blowing! They were created by London based artist Doug John Miller. And as you will be able to see, his style is really impressive. The way Doug plays with dimensions and lines totally gets your attention. Your brain explodes trying to match sizes and figuring that the whole dimensions are twisted. His illustrations play with a surreal world where architecture and human figures take center stage. Some elements of his work are oversized, other are tiny. And this juxtaposition delivers amazing artworks. All of the illustrations are super detailed.
Doug John Miller has created pieces for New York Times, Wired, London Magazine, Pitchfork, Courier Magazine, World of Interiors and more. His illustrations are created using computer modelling and well thought line drawings. He manages to give his work this intricate feel. Like two worlds are colliding. In some artworks people are tiny. In other pieces people look like giants walking around tiny buildings. Take a look. I’m pretty sure that after checking out his work you will recognize his style when you see it again.
Doug is an illustrator currently working in London. His drawings explore small narratives and experiment with colorful and highly detailed compositions of surreal and fantastical architecture.
