What to See at the 2017 SXSW Conference—Spotlight on Food & Social Impact Tracks

Mentor Sessions at SXSW 2016

What do the SXSW Food and Social Impact tracks have in common? Both will inspire badgeholders to creatively explore their respective identities and future. The Food Track brings together the culinary community’s most inspired entrepreneurs, chefs, data scientists, investors, filmmakers, and enthusiasts to connect and explore ways in which technology can be leveraged to transform the industry, while the Social Impact Track highlights innovative ideas from the creative industries that are contributing to a better, more equitable world.

“We’re covering some very serious issues in the Social Impact track [this year], but what keeps me going every day is the compassion, brilliance, and hopefulness inspired by the people doing the work. Our speakers approach problems knowing they can make a difference, and with the confidence that solutions do exist. That’s the best feeling in the world,” said Social Impact programmer, Tammy Lynn Gilmore.

As far as Food Track sessions are concerned, there’s much to be excited about. Programmer, Kelly Krause, pointed out just a few reasons to attend, saying, “This year’s Food Track will touch on everything from AI and Machine Learning changing how we eat, to the future of protein and hacking meat, to the connection between hip hop and food. I’m thrilled this year’s lineup is full of thought leaders, chefs, and change-makers pushing us to think more critically about what we eat, how we’re sourcing it, and what the future of food looks like. Also, there’s a lot of creative and fun food related events at SXSW this year, too. Our Chief Programming Officer, Hugh Forrest wrote about it here.” So…is your mouth watering yet?

17 Ways Breakfast Is Transforming America
March 12, 2017 | 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM

Every weekday morning since 1952, the TODAY show has had a metaphoric seat at the breakfast table of millions of viewers. This unprecedented position has yielded unique insights into the ways American families seek connection, comfort, and conversation around food – creating, in essence, a snapshot of America’s cultural evolution. With findings from a new TODAY research survey on breakfast ready to debut exclusively at SXSW, and a recent slew of buzzy breakfast product launches (smart coffee pots, a reformulated pancake recipe at Denny’s), there is no question that breakfast is disrupting the way Americans eat, think, and live.

The Perfect American Pairing: Bourbon & BBQ
March 12, 2017 | 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM

From three-Martini lunches (1950s) to syrupy-sweet wine coolers (1980s) to the rebirth of classic cocktails (mid-2000s), signature drinks reflect the personality of an era like nothing else. Continuing that trend today, bourbon has been one of the hottest spirits around for more than a decade. Drinkers worldwide have developed an insatiable thirst for the classic American whiskey. And while the spirit may have a new generation of fans, it pairs beautifully with a historic American favorite: barbecue.

Noah Rothbaum, Chief Cocktail Correspondent at The Daily Beast and author of The Art of American Whiskey, will join Edward Lee, celebrity chef and author of the cookbook Smoke & Pickles, to explore the classic duo in depth. The two will not only discuss which bourbons work best with specific styles of barbecue, but also how the right bourbon can bring out the smoky flavor in a brisket.

Join this discussion about our evolving tastes in alcohol through the decades and the long history behind bourbon and barbecue’s love affair. Bonus? Audience members will get the chance to try some of Rothbaum and Lee’s favorite under-the-radar bourbons, as well as a cocktail or two. Start your happy hour early and come thirsty!

Can Hip Hop Save Us?
March 15, 2017 | 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM

Everything consumers want is available at their fingertips, just a click away. But as our cultural addiction to devices grows, so does a major movement that is impacting shopping habits – a rejection of the impersonal. Consumers are craving human connection and community. The future of retail must include interaction and involvement, without the use of a screen, to survive.

Retailers and brands who can provide a live, personal, unique shopping experience will thrive. Community building, curation, storytelling, and one-on-one conversation is crucial for success. Creating a truly interactive, unique experience – one that truly resonates with customers – has never been so important.

Architecture Photography: Beautified China

Architecture Photography: Beautified China

There’s something about Architecture Photography that makes appreciate a lot more another aspect of my love for design. There’s a passion behind tracking a perspective and doing what’s necessary to get to that location. At the destination, you just let your mind free and enjoy the different angles offered by its view. It’s quite fun and inspiring, it gives a meaning to exploration. Let’s take a look at the work from Kris Provost and his series named: Beautified China.

Published via Behance, Kris Provost is an architect based in Shanghai, China. There isn’t much information about Kris but nevertheless to say he’s been out of school for like 5 years and he’s making stuff in Asia. You should definitely give him a follow on Instagram: @krisprovoost.

For the 5 past years I have been dwelling through China. First a few years in the capital Beijing to get used to the ‘China Speed’ before relocating to Shanghai where I will spend at least a few more years. This is my take on the icons spread around the cities. Taken out of context and beautified to dissect the pure forms, shapes and design.

Here Are The Facts About Immigrants In The U.S.

There’s been a lot of talk about immigrants in the news lately since the Trump administration announced the travel ban. Many people have expressed their concerns about the number of people coming in from the seven countries targeted by President Trump, but the truth is that visitors and immigrants from the countries listed only make up about 2 percent of all the foreign-born people currently residing in the United States.

For many of these people, the ban does not affect them because they are naturalized citizens. But for the tens of thousands of others with permanent resident status, their position is not as clear due in part to administration officials’ statement that they might be susceptible to inspection if they choose to travel abroad. Visa holders also risk not being able to return to the United States if they leave the country.

To get a better look at the people who have settled in the United States, The New York Times created a series of charts and maps to show what these people are doing now.

Have a look at some of the information they gathered:

Settlement in Each State: immigrants map

Product Design and UI/UX: iPhone 8 Concept

Product Design and UI/UX: iPhone 8 Concept

It’s that time of the year where a lot of tech blog/news would share their rumours about the next iPhone. With the fact that Apple is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, most of us are kind of eager what they will come up with. Bezels? Tiny bezels or none? Let’s take all the features aside, let’s take a look at this product design by Moe Slah’s iPhone Concept and what was his direction for the UI/UX. I really enjoyed his refined design with an updated iOS 10 UI and think it will be greatly received by everyone. In all honesty, I wish Apple will come up with a total overhaul of their iOS that gotten quite old to use every single day.

Published via Behance, Moe Slah is a digital creative director based in Alexandria, Egypt. With more than 10 years experience in the design field, Moe has also a background in business administration and management information systems. He wears also many hats from also being a Behance Ambassador and worked with International companies in USA, Canada, Australia and more.

Photography Series: Perspe X by Gustav Willeit

Photography Series: Perspe X by Gustav Willeit

As you may have been aware, we have been introducing a photography challenge on Abduzeedo. While being doing this exercise, it makes you more aware of your surrounding and appreciate a lot more the work from our photographers. Having said that, we would love to share the work of Gustav Willeit and his stunning photography work with a series called: Perspe X. Let’s follow his journey!

Gustav Willeit is a freelance photographer based in Corvara in Badia – Corvara, Italy. Before going freelance, Gustav worked for many years as an assistant for various photographers in Zürich. Now, he’s focusing his work into photography but also in fine arts and landscape design as well.

The title of this series, Perspe, originated from a fragment of the German word “Perspektive” (perspective): a programmatic statement alluding to the composition work, which is based on a simulation that fully exploits the opportunities offered by digital technology. The artist traces an unnatural perspective, i.e. a perspective that is “ideated”, invented, that acts and creates “different” places by mirroring the image, thus reaching perfect symmetry often disrupted by a discordant element.
